Why May?
May is the first fully comfortable beach month on Cyprus. Sea temperatures reach 21–22°C — warm enough for extended swimming without a wetsuit. Daytime temperatures average 28°C with eleven hours of sunshine. The resorts are open but not yet at peak capacity — this is the May sweet spot that experienced Mediterranean travellers use to their advantage. The Akamas Peninsula nature reserve is still beautiful before summer dryness sets in, and the mountain villages of the Troodos are excellent for walking in May temperatures.
Who it suits
Beach travellers who want warmth without August's crowds and prices. Families with younger children who prefer 28°C to 38°C. Couples who want a Mediterranean beach holiday at shoulder-season prices. Divers and water sports enthusiasts — May sea conditions in Cyprus are excellent.

Honest warning: May bank holidays (particularly the late May half-term week) are very popular for Cyprus — book 8–10 weeks ahead for this week. May accommodation prices are noticeably lower than June onwards, but this gap closes quickly as summer approaches. Some Ayia Napa nightlife venues are not yet open for the season in early May.
